GOURDS
Medium-sized bowl decorated with palm fruiting stems woven across the top and around the body of the gourd.
The interior piece of this gourd can be removed. It was cut to make the opening and fits over the top.
This large gourd made for Ellen DeGeneres is ringed with cowrie shells and showcases a striking piece of yellow jade.
Gourds have long been used for both utility and art, frequently combining form with function. Southern California grown gourds are known for their thick shells, a bonus for gourd artisans who find them especially versatile and sturdy. Decorating ideas are endless. The shapes of the displayed gourds are augmented with dyes, paint, glaze, bone, shell, fruiting palm stems, semi-precious stones, beads and more. For surface effects, wood burning tools add drama. Carving makes for interesting textures and can augment designs.

Art gourds should not be placed in direct sunlight, as colors may fade. Though tempting, do not place liquids inside or use for fresh flowers unless you know the gourd has been properly sealed. Never use household cleaners on your gourd. Dust with a dry cloth or feather duster. Remember that no two gourds will be exactly alike, so appreciate their unique beauty. Look for surface irregularities in shape, color, and texture, reminding yourself that this lovely item developed on the vine.

I decorate gourds to please myself and others. Each gourd is cleaned, cut, scraped, sanded and decorated, a process that provides hours of enjoyment during the creation and when viewing the finished product.

You may purchase finished available gourds, or place an order to have one created to your liking. Go to the Contact page and e-mail your request. We can discuss specific colors, shapes, materials and price so that your gourd fits you perfectly. Makes a great gift!
