A Novel Experience
May 29th, 2008It only took about 9 months, and no, I’m not referring to having a baby. It’s the time elapsed since my manuscript went to the publisher, Haworth Press, and where it subsequently disappeared into a dark void. You see, a few weeks after I turned it in, Haworth was purchased by Taylor & Francis. The problem was T&F was only interested in the non-fiction divisions. After being informed about the merger and the suspension of Harrington Park Press and Alice Street Imprint projects, I waited expectantly, assuming someone would notify me about the unnamed publishing company poised to take over. Ah, the sounds of silence. With phones disconnected or redirected to T&F, and the old Haworth web site gone, I tried every few weeks to dig up some info. Fearing a fate similar to the Flying Dutchman, finally, I found the someone who could help. His words of “contract release” and “return of rights” are music to my ears. Soon, the manuscript will be mine again. I can’t say if I’ll shop it around again, or if self-publishing is on the horizon, but it’s been a novel experience, one I may write about one day.
