A Novel Experience

May 29th, 2008

It only took about 9 months, and no, I’m not referring to having a baby. It’s the time elapsed since my manuscript went to the publisher, Haworth Press, and where it subsequently disappeared into a dark void. You see, a few weeks after I turned it in, Haworth was purchased by Taylor & Francis. The problem was T&F was only interested in the non-fiction divisions. After being informed about the merger and the suspension of Harrington Park Press and Alice Street Imprint projects, I waited expectantly, assuming someone would notify me about the unnamed publishing company poised to take over. Ah, the sounds of silence. With phones disconnected or redirected to T&F, and the old Haworth web site gone, I tried every few weeks to dig up some info. Fearing a fate similar to the Flying Dutchman, finally, I found the someone who could help. His words of “contract release” and “return of rights” are music to my ears. Soon, the manuscript will be mine again. I can’t say if I’ll shop it around again, or if self-publishing is on the horizon, but it’s been a novel experience, one I may write about one day.

And the winner is…

April 24th, 2008

Me! It was last year. I got on Merv Griffin’s Crosswords and won cash and two trips. I feel like a winner because I just returned from sunny Tortola, B.V.I., where I relaxed at the Long Bay Beach Resort. The weather was great, the food was pretty darn good and the best unexpected part of the trip was the friendliness of the islanders. It had been two years since my last real vacation. And, I won it! Good thing I also won cash, because come next year I’ll receive a 1099. Oh, well. My other trip is to Vegas. Maybe I can parlay that cash and…oh wait. What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas–including your money.

Because a brain is a terrible thing to waste.
